The Durban FilmMart Institute (DFMI) has announced the opening of submissions for the 18th edition of Talents Durban, a talent development programme in partnership with the Berlin International Film Festival.
Taking place in Durban, South Africa, the Talents Durban aims to empower emerging film professionals from Africa, and it accepts applications from experienced film professionals, students in their final year of studies, film school graduates, and professionals with comparable work experience in the film and media industry.
To be eligible, applicants must submit a completed application form, including a sample of past work and an ongoing project, with written consent from copyright owners. Selection will be based on one of four categories: screenwriting, directing, film criticism, or animation.
Eligibility
Applicants must also demonstrate a strong portfolio, showcasing their expertise and potential. This can include having at least one short or feature film screened at a recognized film festival, working on a TV drama series that has aired widely, or having worked on a web or mobile drama series with around 5,000 views. For the Talent Press programme, applicants must have at least one year’s experience as a film critic, reviewer, or journalist.
The programme is open to citizens of an African country, residing in Africa, and aged at least 18 years by 1 July 2024. Individual submissions are accepted; team applications are not.
The Durban FilmMart added that the evaluation process involves technical and project evaluations by a panel of independent industry professionals. Shortlisted projects will be contacted for confirmation, and the official selection will be announced publicly.
How to apply
To apply, interested individuals are encouraged to create an account on the Berlinale Talents website. The deadline for submissions is February 9, 2025.
