The world’s oldest film festival, the Venice Film Festival, is currently underway in Italy, where a number of African filmmakers will be vying for prizes and attention. This year, the continent will show up at the festival with five film projects.
They are:
- Hijra. Director: Shahad Ameen (Spotlight section). Countries: Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Egypt, UK
- Calle Malaga. Director: Maryam Touzani (Spotlight). Countries: Morocco, France, Spain, Germany, Belgium
- My Father and Qaddafi. Director: Jihan K is showing (Out of Competition). Countries: USA, Libya
- Saint Simeon. Director: Olubunmi Ogunsola (Orizzonti shorts). Country: Nigeria
- One Woman One Bra. Director: Vincho Nchogu (Biennale College Cinema) Countries: Kenya, Nigeria.
In addition, the French-Tunisian director Erige Sehiri will be serving as a member of the international jury of the “Luigi De Laurentiis” Venice Award for a Debut Film. This jury will award one feature film taken from across the official, independent, and parallel divisions of the festival. The director and producer of the chosen film will each receive half of a 100,000-dollar cash prize.
The 2025 edition of the festival is the 82nd time the festival has been held. It began on 27 August to close on 6 September.
