Organisers of the Africa Movie Academy Awards (AMAA) have announced that the 20th edition of the event will be held on November 2 at the Balmoral Centre in Ikeja, Lagos.
This year’s ceremony will commemorate its second decade of recognising African filmmaking. It would also honour the legacy of its late founder, Peace Anyiam-Osigwe, who passed on in January 2023.
Speaking on behalf of the AMAA team, Raymond Anyiam-Osigwe, said, “This year’s ceremony promises to be a memorable celebration of the industry’s best and brightest”. Submissions for this year’s honours can be entered until August 10.
Feature films, animations, documentaries, and short films released between January 2023 and July 2024 will be eligible to receive nominations.
At last year’s ceremony, Senegalese film Xalé (by Moussa Sène Absa) was named Best Film. And Burkinabe filmmaker Apolline Traoré was named Best Director Sira.
Established in 2005 by Peace Anyiam-Osigwe, AMAA has honoured filmmakers from Nigerian and across the continent.
According to the organisers, AMAA was created to reward “excellence in film making by Africans and People of African descent from across the globe”. Some of its past winners include Kunle Afolayan, Jahmil X.T Qubeka, Abderrahmane Sissako, and Jeremiah Lemohang Mosese.
