South African actress Connie Chiume passed on August 6. She was famous for her roles in Black Panther, the TV series Gomora, and Beyoncé’s Black Is King, is dead. She was 72. Her death comes days after the passing of Nigerian actress Onyeka Onwenu. Onwenu was also 72.
Chiume’s family announced her death through a statement on her Instagram page: “The Chiume Family regrets to inform you of the passing of the internationally acclaimed award-winning actress Connie Chiume. The family asks for privacy during this difficult period. The family will communicate further details.”
Born in Welkom, Free State province, to a Malawian father and a Zulu mother, Chiume initially trained as a nurse before becoming a teacher. She transitioned to acting, where she gained fame on South African television with roles in Rhythm City, Zone 14, and Gomora.
Chiume received numerous accolades throughout her career. In 2000, she won the NTVA Avanti Award for Best Actress in a Drama Series for her role in Soul City. In 2009, she received a South African Film and Television Award (SAFTA) for Best Supporting Actress in a Drama for her performance as Stella Moloi in Zone 14.
Tributes for the veteran actress
South Africa’s Minister of Sport, Arts, and Culture, Gayton McKenzie, extended his condolences to Chiume’s family, friends, and fans. “Her passing at age 72 marks a profound loss for the South African nation and the world of arts and culture. Chiume’s matchless talents and dedication to her craft have left an indelible mark on the hearts of many”.
Broadcaster Lerato Mbele shared a tribute on X, saying, “A colorful life, stellar career, and joie de vivre. Mam’ Connie was a prolific actress, but it’s in the latter years that her star shone bright and her international profile rose. A testament to ‘slow & steady wins the race’. She received her flowers. Deservedly”.
TV personality and actor Minnie Dlamini also paid tribute, sharing a recent magazine cover they both featured in. “Ulale ngokuthula Ma wami (Rest in peace, my mom), you told me to never stop fighting for this business and that when our kids decide to venture into our business, it’s better than when we did it!!! We will keep fighting in your name,” she captioned her post. Connie Chiume’s legacy as a pioneering and inspirational figure in the entertainment industry will be remembered and celebrated for years to come.
Actor Thapelo Mokoena paid tribute on Instagram. “You have added so much value to our Art, Industry & Lives. Your effortless & endless support was felt all the time. You routed for everyone. To add to that you were the sweetest soul ever. The grace in your eyes & smile lit up spaces. Rest amongst Kings & Queens. Thank you, Ma.
