Weeks after its release of the Yoruba epic House Of Ga’a, Netflix has announced another project in the subgenre. Titled Lisabi: The Uprising, the forthcoming film is executively produced by famed actor Lateef Adedimeji.
The announcement came on Instagram, where the streamer used this caption: “The revolution begins. Your first look at Lisabi: The Uprising, coming to Netflix September 27. Part 2, Lisabi: A Legend Is Born is coming January 2025.”
As was the case with House of Ga’a, Lisabi is based on the true story of the titular character from Yoruba history. A farmer who became a warrior, Lisabi is acknowledged in Egbaland in South-West Nigeria as the hero who rescued his people from oppression by the Oyo Empire.
Although Netflix is yet to issue more details on the specific narrative pursued in the two Lisabi films, it appears the films would celebrate the warrior’s legacy and his importance to the people of Egbaland.
This theory is supported by Adedimeji who shared news of the films on X, saying, “My long-awaited biopic chronicling the escapades of the ultimate Egba warrior farmer #LISABI is finally here.
“After my exploits in Ayinla movie, I knew I had to do this to further glorify my Egba heritage. EGBA people, this is for you!!!!! The entire Yoruba, Africa and Blacks worldwide, this is for you!!!!!”
Niyi Akinmolayan takes the director’s seat on the project. Adedimeji will be expected to take the lead role. Other actors attached to the project include Ibrahim Chatta, Femi Adebayo, and Odunlade Adekola.
