South Africa’s National Film and Video Foundation (NFVF) has extended the deadline for its fourth documentary slate funding submissions to October 28. The call was set to initially close on Monday, October 14.
To be eligible to submit proposals, production companies must be 51% black-owned and managed, with preference given to female-owned companies. Producers must be South African citizens or permanent residents; Tier 1 and Tier 2 production companies are encouraged to apply.
Tier 1 involves experienced filmmakers with a proven track record of developing and producing between three to five theatrically released feature films. Tier 2 are filmmakers with limited experience but have produced various projects.
Specifically, those who have previously received NFVF funding for animation slates, documentary slates, fiction slates, youth projects, or female filmmaker initiatives are ineligible. Also ineligible are individuals or production companies with four or more active NFVF-funded projects across various stages, including development, production, post-production, marketing, distribution, training, and festival funding support.
Funding is capped at R7.5 million per slate and disbursed over three years. This includes R2.25 million for the full development of nine concepts, with a 25% cap for overheads, and R5.25 million for the production of three films.
The NFVF says that, while evaluating, it will consider factors such as the quality of the concept proposal, company capacity and capability, distribution and marketing plan, finance plan and strategy, and business plan and five-year growth strategy.
Applicants are required to submit a proposal including a minimum of three concepts, a business plan and five-year growth strategy, and fully developed projects with research, creative treatment, and teaser. Additional requirements include CVs of key creative team members and chain of title documentation.
Eligible production companies to submit their proposals via the NFVF application portal.
