Nigeria’s National Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB) is set to launch an initiative to train and mentor youths in the art of filmmaking. The two-week program, in collaboration with Nollywood filmmaker Nze Ugezu Ugeze, will culminate in the production of a “Made in Ichida” film.
This initiative was announced by NFVCB Executive Director Husseini Shaibu during a media literacy campaign titled “The Power of Parental Guidance in the Digital Age” on August 17. The campaign took place at St. Augustine’s Parish in Ichida, Anambra State and focused on educating parents, particularly mothers, on the importance of guiding their children’s media consumption in the digital era.
According to Ogbonna Onwumere, the Director of Corporate Affairs at NFVCB, Husseini emphasized that the upcoming filmmaking programme aligns with one of the key points in the eight-point agenda of the Honourable Minister of Arts, Culture and the Creative Economy, Hannatu Musawa.
“The point in reference talks about the provision of comprehensive skills acquisition and development programmes to ensure that young Nigerians have the technical capacity to access opportunities across the creative sector,” he said.
During the campaign, Husseini also spoke specifically to the influential Catholic Women Organisation (CWO) of the Parish, teaching them how to identify classification ratings of films and TV programmes, as well how to guide content consumed by their children using certain phone applications.
A specific date for the commencement of the filmmaking programme is yet to be communicated.
