The National Film and Video Foundation (NFVF) has announced an opportunity for South African postgraduate film students to attend the African International Film Festival (AFRIFF). This year the festival takes place in Lagos, Nigeria, from November 5 to 11.
In an Instagram post, the NFVF called those eligible students to apply to attend AFRIFF. It said in the post, “This is your chance to immerse yourself in African cinema, network with industry professionals, and participate in workshops, masterclasses, and screenings showcasing the best films from across the continent. Don’t miss out on this incredible opportunity to represent South Africa at AFRIFF.”
To be eligible, applicants must be South African citizens or permanent residents and registered at an accredited higher education institution. Master’s degree students in film or film-related studies will be prioritised
How to apply
Interested students are required to submit a one-page letter of motivation, explaining why they should be selected. Furthermore, students will submit a one-page analysis of the South African film Inkabi and certified copies of their latest academic results. They’ll also need a passport valid for at least three months from the festival date.
The NFVF will cover flights, accommodation, daily allowance, and festival accreditation costs for selected students. The submission deadline is Friday, 25 October.

The Africa International Film Festival (AFRIFF) is an annual celebration of African filmmaking held in Nigeria. It first took place in 2010. It features film screenings, workshops, masterclasses, and industry sessions. AFRIFF “offers a platform for filmmakers, students, and professionals to exchange ideas and collaborate on projects that enhance the film industry’s growth in Africa and beyond.”
The NFVF is a South African agency of the Department of Arts and Culture. It was created to ensure the growth of South Africa’s film and video industry. The body provides funding for the “development, production, marketing and distribution of films and also the training and development of filmmakers”.
