The popular series Squid Game will return for a second season on December 26, says Netflix.
The streaming service also shared a synopsis for the forthcoming season, which it says is set a few years after the final game of season 1. As fans would remember, that game saw the emergence of a single winner, Seong Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae), who’s identified by the number 456. This time, the story has an element of revenge or, well, justice-seeking as Gi-hun heads back to the games that gave him a fortune while taking a psychological toll.
In an attempt to “find the people behind the game and put an end to their vicious sport,” Netflix says in the provided synopsis, the protagonist “starts with the most obvious of places: look for the man in a sharp suit playing ddakji in the subway. But when his efforts finally yield results, the path toward taking down the organization proves to be deadlier than he imagined: to end the game, he needs to re-enter it.”
Released three years ago, Squid Game became a global sensation, becoming the most watched series on Netflix, and, later, winning several Emmy Awards. Its colourful costumes inspired party people globally and its games have been replicated by its fans. Last year, Netflix hosted a reality game show based on the series.
In sharing news of the return of the second season, the series creator and director Hwang Dong-hyuk shared a letter to fans of his show. In it, he says, “We’ll do our best to make sure we bring you another thrill ride. I hope you are excited for what is to come.”
Netflix, clearly, is excited. The service has commissioned a third and final season of the show. It arrives in 2025, according to a video the streamer posted online (posted above).
