Nigerian filmmaker, Kunle Afolayan has announced that his award-winning feature film and streaming series project, Anikulapo, will return for a second season. He has also revealed the cast for the upcoming season.
According to the director, the new season will explore slave trade, as a character attempts to rescue a sibling from European merchants.
The new season will be filmed in Ghana and in Oyo state, Nigeria, said Afolayan, as the project infuses “the narrative expands beyond the Oyo Empire, introducing “fresh locations, international actors, and compelling new storylines”.
Returning cast members include Sola Sobowale, Bimbo Ademoye, Aisha Lawal. Gabriel Afolayan, Ronke Oshodi, Taiwo Hassan, Adebayo Salami, and Lateef Adedimeji.
These actors are joined by newcomers Antar Laniyan, Fela Makafui, Pedro Teixeira, Joke Muyiwa, Jide Awobona, KieKie, Mr Macaroni, Shushu Abubakar, and Saidi Balogun.
“We’re overjoyed that Netflix has renewed Anikulapo for another season. We take pride in telling our stories authentically, and this series is a powerful reflection of Nigerian culture and history,” Afolayan said.
“This season will explore the complex realities of the slave trade, with actors from Portugal, Ghana, and Nigeria, showing the global connections in our history. Filming in Oyo State and Ghana helped us ground the story in places rich with our heritage. We’re excited to continue sharing this journey with the world and celebrating the depth of our culture.”
First released as a feature film in 2022, Anikulapo received a series treatment with Anikulapo: Rise of the Spectre, which was released in March this year. The series was successful, reaching the top on Netflix in several countries. The film also picked up several awards at the 2023 Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards.
