Afrobeats star Wizkid, born Ayo Balogun, is getting the documentary treatment. Titled Wizkid: Long Live Lagos, the project will premiere at the 2025 Tribeca Film Festival, which takes place from June 4 to 15.
The documentary, says Tribeca, “follows Wizkid’s rise as a global icon reshaping how Africa is seen—and heard—around the world. Blending intimate moments, explosive performances, and cultural commentary, the film captures how Wizkid is using his platform to change perceptions, reclaim African identity, and inspire a new generation.”
A coproduction between Nigeria, United Kingdom, and the United States is directed by Karam Gill and produced by Gill and Daniel Malikyar. Appearing alongside the “Essence” singer are Femi-Anikulapo Kuti, Jada Pollock, Julie Adenuga, Seni Saraki, and Sunday Are.
An after-movie conversation with Wizkid and director Karam Gill will also take place at the festival.
Other African projects selected for the festival are Widow Champion, a Kenyan production directed by Zippy Kimundu and Egypt’s Happy Birthday, directed by Sarah Goher.
“Tribeca has always been more than a festival—it’s a home for artists navigating an ever-changing industry and an ever-changing world,” festival co-founder Jane Rosenthal, CEO of Tribeca Enterprises said.
“For over two decades,” she added, “we’ve championed emerging voices, celebrated established storytellers, and built a creative community where artists can grow, connect, and thrive. We’re proud of the ecosystem we’ve cultivated and can’t wait to share it with the world this June.”
