Nigerian filmmaker, Funke Akindele’s film, A Tribe Called Judah, was the most searched Nollywood film of 2024, according to Google search data. It is also the most searched film overall.
Directed by Funke Akindele and Adeoluwa Owu, A Tribe Called Judah, tells the story of a single mother with five sons from five different fathers from five Nigerian ethnic groups. Akindele plays the mother who becomes diagnosed with kidney disease, leading her children to consider ways of raising money for her treatment.
The film features some of Nigeria’s most recognisable young film stars, including Timini Egbuson, Jidekene Achufusi, Olumide Oworu, Genoveva Umeh, and others. A Tribe Called Judah is currently up for a Headies award. It was the first Nigerian film to earn a billion naira at the box office, a record that undoubtedly contributed to its status as the most searched film over the past year.
Its record no longer stands as it was eclipsed by Akindele’s subsequent project, Everybody Loves Jenifa.
In second place is Treasure In The Sky, a Nollywood project popular on YouTube. The project stars Clinton Joshua, Chinenye Nnebe, Miwa Olorunfemi, and Precious Akaeze. The over 3-hour production currently has over 25m million views since its release on the video platform at the end of January 2024.
Two Netflix productions follow. Damsel is in third place, while Rebel Ridge, whose leading man Aaron Pierre caused quite a stir online last year, is in fourth place. Dune, the Hollywood blockbuster starring Timothee Chalamet, Rebecca Ferguson, Oscar Isaac, and others, is in fifth place.
Other notable films in the top 10 include Venom, Breath Of Life, Avatar The Last Airbender, Lisabi, and The Idea Of You.
