The Matatu Film Stage has announced that submissions are now open for its 3rd edition, an African film screening and exhibition platform for African filmmakers.
According to the organisers, the Matatu Film Stage, which is based in Uganda is dedicated to celebrating and amplifying the brilliance of African cinema.
“We aim to elevate the African film ecosystem by empowering both creators and audiences,” said the Matatu Film Stage team. “Whether you’re a filmmaker chasing big dreams or a cinephile who can’t get enough of authentic, groundbreaking narratives, we’re here for you—delivering unforgettable experiences, one stage at a time.”
The 3rd edition of Matatu Film Stage is open to filmmakers from Africa and the African diaspora. To be eligible, applicants must be at least 18 years old, and their films must have been completed within the past 24 months.
The submission process requires filmmakers to complete an online form on the application portal, providing accurate information and supplementary materials such as previous work samples or visual references. The deadline for submissions is March 31.
A panel of industry professionals and artists will evaluate the submissions, with successful applicants notified via email upon completion of the selection process. Selected films will be screened across various platforms in multiple African cities from October 2025 to October 2026.
Filmmakers retain all rights to their films, but by submitting, they grant Matatu Film Stage the non-exclusive right to screen their films for the festival and associated promotional purposes.
The Matatu Film Stage is an initiative of Film Possible, a nonprofit nurturing and expanding the African film ecosystem. Film Possible supports filmmakers, drives innovation, and creates platforms to ensure African stories resonate globally.
