Popular Nigerian comedian and actor Richard Ayodeji Makun, widely known as AY, has revealed an ensemble cast for his upcoming film, The Waiter.
The unveiling was done on Monday on his Instagram page, via a humorous video. In the video, the comedian plays the role of a waiter aggressively shoving his male cast members and gently welcoming the female cast into a room. The video is captioned, “Meet the cast of The Waiter.”
It is one more piece of online content AY has used in promoting the film, which is up for a December release. So far, the film’s story is under wraps. But there might be a hint to plot point, as a part of the actor-comedian’s promotion strategy has included playing up a rivalry with fellow actor Deyemi Okanlawon.
Other well-known Nollywood faces revealed in the video include Regina Daniels, Uzee Usman, Gregory “Teddybear” Ojefua, Kunle Remi, and Shaffy Bello. They are joined by two non-Nigerians: Ghanaian actor Chris Attoh and Rwanda’s Alliah Cool. Toka McBaror will oversee proceedings from the director’s chair. McBaror was also responsible for directing Merry Men: The Real Yoruba Demons, an AY project released in 2018.
Over the years, AY has proven adept at turning his fame as a comedian talent into a series of films, several of which have found box office success. And although critical reception has been decidedly mixed for his projects, he has had undeniable financial success.
In 2015, he held the record for the highest grossing Nollywood film. Today, one of his films occupies number 12 on the all-time Nollywood box office list.
