Tonight, African Stories Untold, brainchild of Nigerian producer Lani Aisida, will screen a selection of three short films in collaboration with Canvas, a “contemporary space” in Lagos. The films are Chisom Ifeakandu’s The Moral High Court, Fine Girl by Fatima Binta Gimsay, and PLS RT by Ifeanyi Barbara Chidi.
The event is the second installment of “Unreleased”, a series that began in March with “Unreleased (Music)”, which featured a slew of musical performances at Canvas.
On Instagram, both partners, Canvas X and the African Stories Untold, extended an invitation to the public: “Up for the screening of movies that have not been released yet? We invite you to the first edition of Unreleased (movies) curated by @africanstoriesuntold.”
It added: “Join us for an evening of powerful stories and unforgettable characters, all brought to life by talented female filmmakers and actors.”
In a statement about the event, Aisida said, “There are so many incredible African stories that don’t always get the visibility they deserve. With “Unreleased Movies”, we are creating a space for bold, unfiltered storytelling—giving filmmakers the opportunity to showcase their work while engaging directly with audiences.”
All three filmmakers showing their work at the event are yet to direct feature-length projects on the big screen but are all known players in Nigeria’s film industry. Gimsay has earned screenwriter, director, and producer credits on several TV projects including Africa Magic series Riona, Enakhe, and Tinsel. Ifeakandu was production manager on the Nollywood picture Still Falling.
Chidi has contributed to several TV projects on MNET’s Africa Magic, serving as head writer for Riona and Unbroken and earning other credits on Battleground: The Final Showdown, Jemeji, and Hush.
The event will take place at the Canvas premises, which is located at 36 Rasheed Alaba Williams Street in Lekki, Lagos. “This is just the beginning of something truly special,” Aisida said.
