The National Film and Video Foundation (NFVF) has announced the nominees for the 18th Annual South African Film and Television Awards.
At the top of the nominations is the popular series Shaka Ilembe with 17 nods, one of which went to Thembinkosi Mthembu who is up for Best Actor In A TV Drama for his performance on the series.
Mthembu gets three other nods for three other shows: Best Supporting Actor In A Telenovela (for The River), Best Actor In A Telenovela (for The Outlaws), and Best Actor In A TV Drama (for Adulting).
Another multi-nominated performer is Sindi Dlathu. She gets a Best Actress In A Telenovela nod and a Best Achievement In An Original Song – Telenovela nod. Dlathu gets both for her work on The River, which scored 11 nominations across categories. She is also an executive producer on the show.
According to the organisers, the event is intended to “honour, celebrate and promote the creativity, quality and excellence of South African Film and Television talent and productions, and serve to encourage entrepreneurship and the development of new talent within the industry.”
This year, it introduces five new categories: Best Achievement in Visual Effects (VFX) – TV or Film; Best Achievement in Special Effects (SFX) in Hair and Make-Up – TV or Film; Original Song – Telenovela; Original Song – TV Drama; and Original Song – Feature Film.
The public can participate in the awards by voting for their favorite TV presenter and most popular telenovela or soap. Voting codes will be available on SAFTAs social media platforms and the NFVF website from September 9, while voting closes on October 21.
